Leonardo de Vinci, 1452-1519.
Born in Vinci near Florence, he grew up in Florence where he studied art and sculpture. Later divided his time between Florence and Milan, where he became court painter to Louis XII. In Milan, and then in Rome, he worked mainly on his engineering and scientific projects. Finally moved to France where he spent his last years in the service of Francis I.
