Mark Chagall, 1887 - 1985.
Born in Russia in a Jewish ghetto, studied art in St. Petersburg and went to live in Paris in 1910. Came back to Russia in 1914 where he was caught up in the first World War and then the Russian Revolution. After a stint in Moscow he left for Berlin and then Paris again in 1923. He later settled in the south of France from where he accepted many commissions from France and elsewhere.
